Lesson Procedures
Introduction: (3 minutes)
- TTW show students a still life picture of a bowl of fruit and will ask the class to raise their hands if they’ve seen a picture like this before? Also, does anyone have a picture like this in their house?
- TSW talk about what the picture shows and what past experiences they have with a still life picture like this one.
- TTW ask students if they know what a picture like this one is called. If they don’t answer still life, the teacher will introduce the term to the class.
- Today we will learn how to copy the overlapping of the shapes of fruit in a still life and determine what is shadow and light in the study of value in the still life.
Body: Direct Instruction (55 minutes)
- Input: (15 minutes) TTW show students slides on still lives through the decades to exhibit how the artists went from realism, to simplified shapes. TTW also explain overlapping, value, light and shadow and go over the project guidelines. Students will watch a short clip of a sketch of a cherry.
- Modeling: (5 minutes) TTW briefly model how to sketch a still life with overlapping and color using value. She will point out the light and shadow in the fruit and exemplify how to show that using colored pencils through the hardness or softness of pressure on the pencil. TTW remind students not to outline the whole fruit.
- Check for Understanding: (1 minute) TTW ask students questions on overlapping and how to find light and shadows in a still life to make sure they understand how to draw it. She will also remind students not to touch the fruit ever because it will mess up the view for other students drawing at the table. Also, when sharing the colored pencils, there are a limited supply of colors so students will be reminded not to wait on a color but to go on to another fruit.
- Independent Practice: (34 minutes) TSW go to their assigned seat and be handed a paper and pencil. They are to draw the shapes of the fruit first, and then they may color them with the colored pencils provided. TTW constantly remind students about overlapping and to check their lines to make sure where a fruit is positioned is where it actually is in the still life. Clean up will be 5 minutes before the time to leave class.
Closure: (2 minutes)
- TTW ask students what are some things we learned today? Do you feel more confident in your drawing or coloring after today?
- TTW remind students that along with the still life, we will be adding a contrasting background to these next class.
Assessment/Evaluation
- TTW check students’ drawings for the correct overlapping of the fruit.
- If students are struggling with the drawing or coloring, TTW give demonstrations at the tables or on the board with the elmo.
- In the closure, students will talk about what they learned about today. TTW know if students got the information if they mention the information from the slides and about what they learned during the project.
- Why are they called still lives? How did you show that a fruit was in front of another fruit? Why don’t we want to outline the whole shape black?
